The Wetsuit Question Nobody Explains Before Your First Tropical Trip
A framework for the rental-counter decision the industry treats as self-evident — and genuinely isn't.
The rental counter question you will typically get on your first trip is “what size?” — not “what thickness?” They hand you what they’ve got. Usually this works out. Occasionally you’ll spend an hour shivering, or an hour roasting, and you don’t know why because nobody told you what really makes a wetsuit work.
How a wetsuit actually works
A wetsuit doesn’t keep you dry. It traps a thin layer of water between the neoprene and your skin, your body heats that layer, and the resulting heated layer is the insulation. The thicker the neoprene the more it and slows the heat loss making you warmer.
Fit matters as much as, if nto more than thickness. A loose 5mm flushes cool water through every time you move and the insulation layer is never created. A well-fitted 3mm will outperforms it. If a rental suit is baggy at the neck, wrists, or ankles, that’s a big problem, you will never be able to keep the water contained to get warm. So check the fit before you even think about thickness.
The other thing they don’t tell you: water pulls heat out of you about 25 times faster than air. Same 78°F you’d happily sit in as air is actively stripping heat from a submerged body. And divers aren’t swimming — you’re hovering, watching, drifting. No muscle heat. A swimmer and a diver in the same 74°F water are not having the same afternoon.
Figuring out the right wetsuit, by water temperature
- 82°F and up — rashguard or 1–2mm. Bonaire (~85°F year-round), Aruba, Caribbean peak summer.
- 75–82°F — 3mm full suit. This is most Caribbean diving. Cozumel year-round (78–86°F), Florida Keys most of the year, the Caymans, Hawaii in summer.
- 70–75°F — the ambiguous zone. 3mm or 5mm depending on you. Maui in winter, Cabo / Sea of Cortez January through May, Caribbean January lows.
- 65–72°F — 5mm. Southern California summer, some winter Caribbean at depth.
Below that you’re outside the tropical conversation.
When you’re between two thicknesses, go thicker. You can flush cool water into a warm suit or unzip at the surface. You cannot add insulation at 60 feet.
The part that isn’t in the chart
Body composition, hydration, age, how active you are on the dive — all real, all affect how cold you get. The same 78°F water produces one comfortable diver and one shivering diver. Two dives a day for a week compounds it: cumulative heat loss is why a lot of Cozumel divers wear a 3mm through August even though the water is in the mid-80s. The first dive feels fine. The fourth doesn’t.
One more thing worth noting — thermoclines. Most local dive shop operators will tell you the surface temp, ask if there is a thermocline and at what depth it typically appears. If your dive shop mentions a thermocline, believe them and take the thicker suit.
If you run cold on land, you run cold underwater. Ask for one step thicker than the operator suggests and thank yourself on the safety stop.
